The Kent City Eagles and Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates battled with each other all night long, and the Pirates scored the games final five points to top the Eagles, 35-33, in a much-anticipated rematch of last year’s quarterfinal game. With the victory, the Pirates will face Calvin Christian in the Division 3 regional final Wednesday.
Kent City led by one point after the first eight minutes and increased their lead to three, 17-14, as the teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime. The Eagles led by two, 27-25, entering the fourth quarter. The Pirates tied it with a pair of free throws, and then Zara Weber was the next player to score with a deep triple to give Kent City at 30-27 lead.
After a field goal and a free throw by Pewamo-Westphalia, the two teams remained tied for several minutes. This time it was a triple from Kenzie Bowers that gave the Eagles a 33-30 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Kent City was unable to score again while the Pirates had two free throws to cut the lead to one, 33-32, and connected on an old-fashioned three-point play from Ellie Droste with 16 seconds to go in the game. The Eagles were unable to score in the closing seconds.
Zara Weber led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points. Kenzie Bowers finished the night with nine points, while Janelle Krueger netted six. Also scoring were Jenna Harrison and Lauren Freeland with three and two points, respectively. Ellie Droste led all scores with 15 points.
Kent City finishes the season with a 19-5 record. Pewamo-Westphalia advances to the Division 3 Regional Final at Kent City High School on Wednesday night against the Calvin Christian Squires. Game time is 7:00 in The Nest.
