Kent City’s 7th grade basketball team played two tough games on Saturday. The Eagles lost to Big Rapids 46-37 and beat Hesperia 33-26. In the first game against Big Rapids, the Eagles played great on defense. They continue to improve on their communication working together as a group. However, they struggled shooting the ball in the first half. Big Rapids had an early lead at the half 24-15. In the second half the Eagles worked the ball better on offense. They scored 11 in the third quarter. However, Big Rapids would score 13, improving their lead to 38-26. Kent City battled back to bring the game within three points in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had turnovers that turned into late baskets by Big Rapids, bringing the final score 46-37.
In the second game against Hesperia, Kent City had trouble moving the ball early against their tough 2-3 zone. It was a defensive battle the entire game between the two teams as both team struggled on the offensive end. Hesperia would take the early lead 9-4 in the first quarter, but Kent City went on a run in the second quarter closing the gap to just one point. In the second half, both teams proved tough defense by forcing several turnovers. The Eagles were able to tie the game in the third quarter 20-20, creating an exciting fourth quarter. With tough help-side defense from Kent City, the Eagles were able to out score Hesperia to get their seventh win on the season. The final score was 33-26.
Kent City has improved every week with their basketball skills. That has been our goal this season. I look forward to seeing how these young men grow throughout the season. It is exciting to watch.
