All of the practices, open gyms, film sessions, ball-handling camps, shooting camps, etc., etc. have lead to this point. On Friday, Kent City will play for state championship at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University against Grass Lake at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles have been working for this opportunity since elementary school and despite obstacles that teams in the past did not have deal with, this group has made it, and in style. Both the Warriors and Eagles have never played in the state finals, however Kent City does have the advantage of having a game under their belts in the arena (Grass Lake’s semifinal game vs. Hemlock was cancelled due to COVID). Grass Lake has occupied the top spot in Division 3 for most of the season, while the Eagles have generally have been ranked 2nd or 3rd. Arguably the most anticipated game of the season, that actually came to fruition.
The Warriors are talented, led by senior guard Abrie Cabana who is averaging 22 points per game and will play for Grand Valley State University next season. Cabana and company are 19-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to state power Detroit Edison (65-50). Grass Lake has picked up some big wins along the way with victories of Detroit Renaissance (Division 1 Finalist) and Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (Division 3 Powerhouse). There are no common opponents to compare, just two programs who have been working hard to get to this point. It will be an exciting game between two well-coached teams. Tickets will be available at 6:00 p.m. if you do not have them already, they will not last long, so if you can make it to East Lansing on Friday, I would advise you get your tickets and head over for what is shaping up to be a great day for the Eagles!
