Kent City will travel to the Igloo on the campus of Portage Northern to take on Schoolcraft on Monday for the chance to make history. No other girls basketball team at Kent City has ever advanced to the final four, in fact, Monday’s game is only the fifth time the Eagles have made the MHSAA Quarterfinals. The first time was back in 1977 when the Eagles fell to Dewitt. Then in 1988 and 1989, Kent City made back to back appearances, but could not get by Saginaw Valley Lutheran in both meetings. Then in 2018, this year’s seniors were freshman on the team who advanced to the Elite Eight, falling to Pewamo Westphalia. This year, there are no Panthers (Dewitt), Chargers (Saginaw Valley Luteran), or even Pirates (Pewamo Westphalia), standing in the way, instead Kent City will have to get by the Eagles to advance to the Breslin Center on Wednesday.
Schoolcraft and Kent City have not met on the hardwood, but they have had some near misses. Like Kent City, the purple and gold Eagles have never made it past the quarterfinal round either. Their varsity girls basketball team has captured two Regional championships in consecutive seasons, 2016-2017 (lost to Pewamo Westphalia) and 2017-2018 (lost to Ypsilanti Arbor Prep). This season, Schoolcraft is 14-2, with both of their losses coming at the hands of Hackett Catholic Central. In the Regional Semifinals, Schoolcraft got their revenge, slipping by the Irish, 53-51. We do not know much about Schoolcraft and have not played a common opponent this season. Last year, Kent City ran into Kalamazoo Christian in a showcase game at Cornerstone University. The Eagles put a running clock on the Comets, 79-33. Schoolcraft beat K-Christian this season in their only meeting (62-31) and split with them in 2019-20. Expect a close game that will result in the Eagles making their first ever appearance in the semi-finals . . . can’t go wrong with that prediction 🙂
