Eagles News · Varsity girls beat Covenant Christian, 69-23, to win regional championship

Kent City scored the game’s first eleven points and never allowed Covenant Christian to score more than a half dozen points in any quarter and cruised to their second regional championship in four years with a 69-23 victory over the Chargers in the Division 3 regional final played at Calvin Christian High School.

Jenna Harrison made six of the team’s 14 three-pointers to lead the way with 20 points for the Eagles.  Lexie Bowers finished with 14 points, twelve of those from outside the arc.  Taryn Preston had three triples of her own and finished with eleven points.  Maddie Geers also had eleven points, and Kenzie Bowers chipped in nine points including the team’s first three-pointer of the game to get things rolling.  Emma Geers added four points.

The Eagles applied defensive pressure that resulted in several turnovers by the Chargers.  Kent City led after the first quarter, 15-6, and then went on a 12-2 run at the end the first half to lead 31-11 at halftime.  The third quarter saw the Eagles make five threes while continuing to cause troubles for the Chargers’ offense and outscored Covenant Christian in that quarter, 24-6.

Kent City, now 19-0, advances to the Division 3 quarterfinal game at Portage Northern High School on Monday night at 7:00.  The Eagles will face Schoolcraft, 14-2, which beat Gobles in the Watervliet regional final.
