On Tuesday, the Eagles put together their most complete half of the season and rode a dominating effort to a 6-2 victory over the visitors from NorthPointe Christian. The Eagles scored early and often in a six goal first half. Carlos Gomez and Juan Leon got the offense started at the 27.:47 mark when Leon muscled a pass through traffic in the box to Gomez who finished with his right foot. Two and a half minutes later Gomez drew a penalty about 25 yards out from the Mustangs goal. Fredo Bolanos-Colin came up from the back line and laced the free kick over the Mustang wall before it dipped into the net passed a flatfooted keeper, a beautiful goal. At the 22 minute mark Bolanos-Colin sent a through ball behind the defense which Carlos Gomez tracked down and finished well for a 3-0 lead.
While the Eagles scored in bunches the Mustangs were not without chances. Giovanni Sanchez, Manny Hernandez and Bolanos-Colin stood strong in defense and sixth grader Aaron Vanderwest scooped up the few chances that scooted through. After a relative lull in the action the Eagles attack exploded again in the last five minutes of the half. Santi Gomez scored three goals in quick succession with assists from Giancarlo Coronado and two from Bolanos-Colin.
The Eagles lightened the pressure in the second half allowing many of our reserves to gain valuable experience including sixth graders Jose and Jesus Pozas, Brandon Juarez, and Kevin Espinoza. Many of these players rose to the occasion as they took on greater responsibility. The Mustangs were able to score twice including one goal off a penalty kick, but the outcome was never in doubt. The 6-2 victory improves our Eagles’ record to 6-2-1. They will travel to Wyoming Lee on Wednesday before wrapping up the season with a home game vs. Allendale on Friday.
