Kent City’s Runnin’ Eagles had a great end to homecoming weekend at the Portage Invitational. The girls’ cross country team surged in the final mile to move up two spots to clinch 7th of the 42 teams. Each girl worked hard to pass in the final loop to lower their score.
The Eagles were led by two medalists–8th place Layla Martini in 19:25 and 34th place Aly Linsley in 20:33. Both ran aggressively resulting in season record times. Abby Ignasiak and Elizabeth Sible were the next Eagles, but Kierra Flegel was right on Liz’s heels with her fastest of 2019. Emily Lantzer closed well as did Carley Denhof who ran 1.5 minutes faster than her previous best. Kristen Toporski also ran her best and earned a reserve medal.
Six of the eight boys who raced lowered their season best times and as a team they finished 22nd. Ryan Wheeler moved up 20 places during the race and finished in 17:51. Thomas Swanson ran well in 18:26 and Brandon Rodriguez keeps improving, crossing the line in 18:48! Jordan Schuiling was 4th man and Clark Oxford was 5th in 20:53. Ethan Slock broke 21 for the first time and Isaac Huizinga sprinted in for his best.
Kent City will host the third of four CSAA Silver jamborees at Long Lake on Monday. The middle school race will kick off at 4:15 and the varsity teams will race at 4:50.
