Layla Martini does not look like someone who would strike fear in the hearts of others upon first glance. However, if she has her running spikes on and is toeing the line awaiting the starter’s pistol, it is a completely different story. The junior continues to make a name for herself at Kent City and in west Michigan as an elite runner. At the Stanton Hornet Run last Saturday, Martini not only won her race against her fellow juniors, but was also the overall champion, posting the fastest time of any high school female competitor with a 20:06. Earlier in the week, Martini lead the Eagles to a convincing victory over the rest of the CSAA Silver in the first jamboree of the season with her first place finish. The Eagles posted a score of 17, the best possible score in cross country is a 15! On the season, Martini has yet to lose a race.
Martini also runs for the track and field team in the spring and has had great success there as well. Last season, Martini earned all-state honors with her 7th place finish in the 3200 meter run. In addition to her all-state status, Martini also holds the Kent City school record in the 3200 meter run and as a member of the 3200 meter relay team. It will be a busy week for the junior as she has back to back races on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Martini will travel Michigan State University for a race featuring the best of the best from across the state, regardless of division. Last year, Martini finished in 59th overall in the field of 266. Then on Saturday, Martini and the Eagles will be in action close to home at the Sparta Invitational. This year since Sparta is building a new middle school, they have moved the race to Fruit Ridge Hay Rides just outside of Kent City. We certainly do not want people to get the wrong impression, Martini truly is a nice and polite young lady — that is unless you are in a race with her — then you had better watch out!
