Multiple Teams · Kent City Athletic Weekly 3-25 — 3-30

Hibernation 2018-2019 is nearly over. Most of the snow is gone and my truck needs a realignment after one pass down our road, sure signs that spring is here.  We are still waiting to get outside full time, and it may affect the sports we have scheduled for this week.   Our fields are not quite ready for the season as all of this water from melting snow and rain showers and snow showers must go somewhere.   If you are new to the area or have not operated a shovel in Kent City, you might not know that one of the major components in our soil is clay.   Clay does not drain very well and it also can be shaped into nice pottery.   Therefore, every time we are on our fields when they are saturated like they are now, we leave behind foot prints that in time will turn into little sculptures after they are dried by the sun.

We are lucky to have a great team working on our fields.  Check that . . . a great groundskeeper who takes great pride in the conditions of our facilities (and not just at the high school but the middle school and elementary as well), Tim Parmeter.   Tim has been working at Kent City for over a decade now, and the time and effort he puts into giving our student-athletes the best playing surface possible can often be a thankless job.   As an athletic director, I certainly am appreciative of Tim’s willingness to go above and beyond for Kent City Athletics, especially since there is way more to his responsibilities than just getting playing surfaces ready games.

This spring, take time to thank Tim for his important contribution to the success and well being of our student athletes.  In addition, show your appreciation for Tim’s efforts by being good stewards of the facilities that we have.   Pick ups any trash you find on our grounds, keep your vehicles in the parking lots and off the grass, and encourage your student-athletes to chip in when needed and take pride in their facilities.  I know that these small acts of appreciation will not only save Tim precious time, but will also allow him to get to more areas that he already does.

The varsity boys track and field team ran indoors at the GVSU Lakers Challenge on Friday.   Giovanni Weeks brought home two first place medals in the 200 meter dash (22.78) and the long jump (20’7.5″).   In fact, Weeks beat the 2nd place finisher by one second in the 200 m dash without using starting blocks!   Weeks also teamed up with Mateus Mello, Jayden Williams, and Evan Jones to take 3rd place in the 4×300 meter relay and finished second in the 60 meter dash with a personal best time of 7.15.

Over the weekend, senior Zara Weber and sophomore Jenna Harrison competed in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) 3 point shoot out.   To qualify, the top 20 three point shooters from across the state are invited to participate, culminating in the championship which took place during the halftime of the Class A state championship.   Neither Weber or Harrison made the championship round, but their ability to light it up from beyond the arc will not be soon forgotten (Weber) and will be something we will look forward to in the future (Harrison).

If you are not traveling for spring break and are looking for something to do with the family, we will be opening the Kent City Pool for some spring break hours.   In the past we have not been open during spring break, but we have some lifeguards who were willing to come in over the break so the community can enjoy this resource.   Use the following link to see those hours and the upcoming spring schedule:
