Multiple Teams · Kent City Athletic Weekly 3-18 — 3-23

Saturday turned out to be a busy day for Kent City Athletics during this short lull between winter and spring sports.   Between East Lansing and Traverse City, the Eagles were well represented at state-wide functions.

At the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (M.I.A.A.A.) conference, senior Lauren Freeland’s picture was on display for winning one of six M.I.A.A.A. scholarships awarded each year.   In fact, Lauren was chosen the M.I.A.A.A. Scholarship Committee to apply for the National Scholarship as well — only two student-athletes from Michigan are picked to apply!

Kent City’s varsity boys basketball coach, David Ingles also was at the conference speaking at a session on mental health.  Coach Ingles joined a panel of others professionals who are working to help those struggling with mental health.   During the session, Coach Ingles shared his personal story to a packed room, emphasizing the importance of seeking help.

In East Lansing, Lauren Freeland was honored at the halftime of the division 3 state championship game for earning one of the 32 available MHSAA Scholar Athlete Awards, the first time a Kent City student has ever been chosen for this honor.   Freeland will attend Michigan State next year, where she will run for the Spartans.

Finally, junior Eli Carlson was also at the Jack Breslin Center on Saturday, shooting in the BCAM Top-Shooters contest where he advanced to the finals at the halftime of the division 1 state championship.   Carlson made 11 triples in the finals, falling just one shot short of winning the event.    Sophomore Jenna Harrison will be shooting this weekend in the same event, only at VanNoord Arena at the girls basketball state championships at Calvin College.
