Ready or not, winter sports are here! This first week of December will be a great opportunity to catch all of our winter sports teams in action as we have seven home varsity contests, including the 28th Annual Kent City Kickoff Wrestling Classic.
With the large number of home events (and events of this magnitude), we are going to need some help. Therefore I thought it would be a good time to review our needs in terms of athletic event staff. We do offer credit ($20 for each event worked) towards student-athletes’ athletic fee. During the winter months, we are looking for ticket-takers, clock operators, and announcers. The Kent City Sports Boosters are always looking for help in the concession stand, and for your help there, you can earn a family pass to all home Kent City Athletic events (excluding MHSAA events). If you are interested in helping out please let me know!
One change this winter will be the addition of a basketball cheer team. Coaches Kim Gugliotta and Hillary VanDam have been preparing their team to perform at halftimes and lead the student sections at home varsity basketball games. With a squad of 20 girls, the cheer team is building on the momentum created this Fall at the Kent City Football games.
Check out our new schedule for the pool which has already been posted under the pool tab on www.kentcityschools.org . The posted schedule will be running from Sunday, December 2 — Saturday, January 5. We did add some special Holiday Break Open Swims so families looking for something to do can make use of our pool. Following the break we will start up with another round of Monday evening and Saturday morning swim lessons. We will also be continuing with our junior swim teams and are working on setting up some actual competitions. The swim teams will be open to elementary and middle school students this time around. Stay tuned for more information on our programming that will be coming this week for the Kent City Pool!
I also wanted to draw your attention to some articles on our athletic website that I did not want anyone to miss. For some reason, the articles have not been posting to Facebook automatically. We are working with VNN to fix this problem. Here are some links to some feature articles that were recently posted:

Four to Watch
Varsity Bowling vs. Sparta (@ Sparta Lanes)
Monday, Decembe 3, 2018 @ 3:30 p.m.
The varsity girls and boys bowling team will officially kick off the 2018-2019 season against our neighbors to the south at Sparta Lanes. It will be a home contest for both teams as they share Sparta Lanes as their home lanes. After a huge turn-around season in 2017-2018, the boys’ team is looking to have a breakthrough season with four of their top five bowlers back and the addition of some quality bowlers joining this year’s team. Last year, senior Mason McVicker qualified for the State Finals, while fellow senior Nick Brummel earned all-conference. The girls’ team will continue to improve with several bowlers gaining experience last year and a number of new faces on the team. Leading the way is senior Chelsea Torres who finished in the top 25 at last season’s Regional Tournament.
Varsity Boys Basketball vs. Coopersville
Tuesday, December 4, 2018 @ 7:00 p.m.
Kent City will pay their first game in the Nest in 2018-2019 looking to rebound from their 60-52 loss at Orchard View last week. A long-standing tradition, the opener with Coopersville has produced some great games between the Broncos and the Eagles. In fact, last year’s game was decided in over time, a 50-48 victory that was preserved by two Kent City defensive stands late in the contest. With the score tied in regulation, Kent City forced the Broncos into a bad shot at the buzzer forcing overtime. Then with time running out in overtime, and holding a two point advantage, the Eagles stole the in bounds pass to seal the victory. Coopersville will enter Tuesday’s game with a 1-1 record, losing to Hamilton and defeating Muskegon Heights Academy.
Varsity Girls Basketball vs. White Cloud
Friday, December 7, 2018 @ 6:00 p.m.
It was difficult to choose a game to highlight for the varsity girls basketball team this week since all three of their games are important. The road to their fifth consecutive CSAA Silver championship will begin against last season’s runner-up, the White Cloud Indians. The Indians finished 16-7 last season losing in the District finals to Mason County Central. White Cloud should have everyone back from last season’s team, however, so do the Eagles. Kent City easily beat White Cloud in both meetings in 2017-2018, 65-27 and 70-24. Kent City also has games with Coopersville who they defeated 55-40 last season after trailing at the half and Detroit Martin Luther King, a Quarterfinalist in Division I last season. A 3-0 record following this first week of play would be a sign of great things to come.
Varsity Wrestling @ 28th Annual Kent City Kickoff Classic
Saturday, December 8, 2018 @ 9:00 a.m.
This tournament was started two years following the creation of the Kent City Wrestling program, and has continue for 28 consecutive seasons. A lot has changed over the years, but I will let Nathan Vanderwest fill you in on that with his feature article he is working on this week. Ten teams will converge on the Nest on Saturday for a team-style tournament. Each team has been divided into one of two pools of five where they will wrestle round-robin. Following these four matches, a cross-over with the other pool will occur determining the final standings. Last season Kent City finished in 4th place for the 2nd consecutive season. Rockford returns, looking for a 3-peat, but a number of other quality programs, including Kent City stand in their way.
Here is this week’s schedule.

Away Games are in red.
