Girls Junior Varsity Basketball, Varsity Girls Basketball · Girls Varsity Basketball chasing history in 2018-2019

Save the Date

Let this serve as your official save the date for the Eagle Nation.   All signs are pointing to Monday, March 11 as being a pretty important game for the Kent City girls’ basketball program.   Why?  The MHSAA Girls’ Basketball Regionals are coming to the Nest and if everything turns out as expected, it will be a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals at Cedar Springs High School between Kent City and Pewamo Westphalia.

Now we certainly do not want to get ahead of ourselves, so simply keep this on your radar. In that “potential” match–up,  Kent City will be looking to avenge last season’s 45-30 loss to the Pirates, but that can only happen if both teams get through their respective Districts.  Kent City will travel to Ravenna for Districts, while the Pirates will host.  The last time Kent City hosted a Regional was 2012 when the Eagles lost by two points to conference arch-nemesis (and eventual State Champion) Morley Stanwood, and from the pictures of that game, it is safe to say things were a little crazy in the Nest.

Eagles are Back . . . and More

Kent City returns all five starters from last season’s team who made a run to the MHSAA Quarterfinals for the first time in 28 seasons.  Leading the way is sophomore Kenzie Bowers who earned 1st Team All-State (AP) last season and is being courted by several Division I programs.  Other weapons in Coach Carlson’s arsenal include another offensive weapon in senior Zara Weber who was All-State Honorable Mention last season.  Lauren Freeland returns for her fourth season on the varsity team while Holly Kosak is back for her senior season with one full year on the varsity under her belt.  Returning after a one year hiatus is senior Janelle Krueger, who started as a freshmen on the varsity team before sustaining an injury that sidelined her for quite some time.   Another jack of all trades, Krueger just signed to play softball at Siena Heights University next year.

Sharp shooting sophomore Jenna Harrison is back after a marvelous freshmen season along with Audrey Dreyer who also starred on the varsity as a freshmen.   Mikayla Loew (junior) will bring a blue collar attitude to the team after playing on the varsity last season.  Lauren Schnicke (junior)returns for her third season on the varsity squad and Joan Carr (junior) will be on the varsity for the first time after playing on the junior varsity team last year.

Battle Tested

The Eagles will certainly be battle tested when they head into March.  On the first Saturday of the season (December 8) Kent City will travel to Okemos to play in a showcase game against Detroit Martin Luther King.  Throughout the day, several of the state’s best teams will be in action.  Detroit Martin Luther King, a class A school (1,404 students) finished 17-4 in 2017-2018.  Over the Holiday Break, Kent City will play in another showcase game, this one at Grand Valley State University.   In this game, Kent City will take on Comstock, a team who finished 19-2 in 2017-2018 and has their top player back.

Other can’t miss games come in the last week of the season, when Kent City travels to Central Montcalm and then will host the Big Reds of Muskegon.  Central Montcalm posted a 20-0 regular season record last season before losing in the first round of the Districts.  The Muskegon vs. Kent City series is back again, a year removed from Kent City’s 92-50 loss to the Big Reds.  Several other non-league games adorn Kent City’s schedule including match-ups with Coopersville, Grant, Grand River Prep, Cedar Springs, Sparta, and Kenowa Hills (@  the Delta Plex).

Within the CSAA Silver, Kent City will be the heavy favorites to win their fifth consecutive league championship in 2018-2019.  The two biggest challengers will be White Cloud and Morley Stanwood.  The Indians finished in 2nd place in 2017-2018, and returns several players, while Mohawks won a District championship last season losing by 5 points to Mason County Central in the Regional Semi-Finals.

Double Check Those Start Times

For the 2018-2019 seasons, we are attempting to work the start times for the varsity girls basketball team to better accommodate fans. Take note of what time each game starts. CSAA Silver home games (Fridays) have been bumped back to 6:00 p.m. while road games will remain a 5:30 p.m. We are also planning on swapping the boys and the girls equally when they play in the Nest together. The boys will play the second game (7:00 p.m.) against Coopersville and Grant, while the varsity girls will play the nightcap (7:00 p.m.) against Grand River Prep and Sparta. Finally, there are those nights when the junior varsity girls plays with the varsity girls, meaning the varsity girls will begin at 7:00 p.m.
