A lot of things get better with age. Giovanni Weeks happens to be one of those things. On Friday, Weeks broke the school record in the 200 meter dash — twice! In the prelims at the Battle Creek Lakeview Invitational, Weeks posted a 22.82 which was the new school record in that event for a couple of hours. Then, it was time for Weeks to run again. This time, Weeks registered a 22.63, another school record and his first gold medal of the night beating his nearest opponent by .75 seconds. It has been pretty good run for the junior in his first two outdoor events this season. On Tuesday, Weeks popped a jump of 21’4.5″ in the long jump at a dual meet against Holton, a personal record. He also grabbed a second gold medal at the Battle Creek Invitational in the long jump, with a leap of 20’4.5″
Weeks has also been a huge component in Kent City’s success the past two seasons in football as a running back and linebacker. Over that time, Kent City has compiled an 18-4 record, winning back to back CSAA Silver Championships and making consecutive appearances in the District Finals. A two time All-Conference selection, Weeks earned Honorable Mention All-State in the Associated Press in 2017. Another big week awaits Weeks and the Eagles. On Tuesday, Kent City hosts White Cloud in a CSAA dual. Then on Friday, the Eagles will host the fourth annual Kent City Elite Invitational with 21 teams from across West Michigan congregating at Ward Memorial Field. The speed (three meets) at which Weeks has accomplished these feats may come as surprise to some; but certainly not to anyone who witnessed Weeks in the off-season. Devoted to the weight room leading up to, during and following the football season; Weeks could be successful without all of the extra work. However, good enough is not, well . . . good enough for Gio Weeks. He is chasing greatness — and at a very high speed!
