Multiple Teams · Kent City Athletic Weekly 3-19 — 3-24

Spring sports are officially here.  Many of our teams have already been out enjoying the spring weather, while others have been enduring it.  We are much better off than the schools in northern Michigan who were hit with a snow storm last Thursday.  I know because I spent the weekend in Traverse City at the annual Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association conference.  It is always a great chance to enjoy a weekend learning and networking with athletic directors from across Michigan.
One of the sessions I attended discussed the importance of using social media to communicate with all of the stakeholders within your athletic program.  This may come as a surprise to everyone, but apparently I am behind in the social media scene.  According to the speaker, Instagram is the place to be to communicate with student-athletes.  Therefore, I spent time on Saturday creating the official Instagram page of Kent City Athletics at kentcityeagles.  I even posted on it and have my first follower (Thanks Noel Dreyer).  That first post is an interesting story.  I stopped by the Varsity News Network (VNN) booth to ask some questions regarding our athletic website.  The representative from our area handed me his business card, which I did not initially look at.   Later that day I pulled it out my pocket and noticed the picture on the card — Shane Rodenburg, 2015 alum and wrestling state champion.

Speaking of success at the state level, our varsity girls basketball team fell short in the elite eight last week at Cedar Springs High School.  The Eagles ran into a talented and deep Pewamo-Westphalia team, falling to Pirates 45-30.  It was Kent City’s fourth quarterfinal appearance, including the first time in 29 seasons.  The Eagles finished the season 22-4 including a CSAA Silver,  District, and  Regional Championships.  It certainly was fun to watch the team play on such a big stage in front of a huge crowd.
We have a few things happening this week including a scrimmage for the varsity boys golfers and an indoor track meet for the boys and girls track and field teams.   On Saturday, Coach Evers will put on the 14th annual Kent City Ridge Run.  I am going to be participating in the 5K on Saturday — so if you do not see me until after spring break I am probably still recovering.
#kceaglesworkethic — This is something else I learned at the conference.  You are supposed to put hashtags on things.  Not really sure why, but I think this a good one for our athletic programs.
