It is hard to believe that the first full week of October has come and gone. Our fall sports teams are nearing the ends of their seasons, which means that the MHSAA tournament is just around the corner. In fact, our varsity girls golf team will be traveling to Kalamazoo (Milham Park Golf Course) to compete in their post-season tournament on Wednesday. All of the other MHSAA Tournament sites and times (except for football which will be announced on Sunday, October 22) are listed below:
- Varsity Boys Soccer @ Orchard View — Tuesday, October 17 @ 4:15 p.m.
- Varsity Girls & Boys Cross Country @ Allendale — Saturday, October 28 @ 10:00 a.m. (Girls’ Race) 11:00 a.m. (Boys’ Race)
- Varsity Volleyball @ West Michigan Christian (vs. Ravenna) — Monday, October 30 @ 6:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, the varsity girls and boys cross country teams remained perfect in the CSAA Silver easily winning the jamboree at Hesperia. The boys beat Morley Stanwood by 45 points while the girls outdistanced White Cloud by 32 points. Lauren Freeland and Fraser Wilson remained perfect in CSAA Silver races with 1st place finishes. Layla Martini finished in 2nd again, followed by Kenzie Bowers (4th), Abby Ignasiak (6th), Elizabeth Sible (8th), Ryan Kik (18th) and Kristen Toporksi (19th). For the boys, Hunter Nelson moved up to 3rd place, he was followed by Casey Carew (5th), Alex Russo (7th), and Nick Flegel (8th).
The Eagles were not finished. On Saturday, Kent City traveled to Portage for one a preview of the State Finals. Fraser Wilson won the race for the 2nd consecutive season, beating the 2nd place runner by 24 seconds! Hunter Nelson (25th) and Casey Carew (44th) also earned medals. Overall, the boys team finished in 6th place. The girls also finished in 6th place as a team led by junior Lauren Freeland with her personal best time of 18:49 for a fourth place finish. Freshmen Layla Martini finished in 14th place with a personal best time of 19:33 which is 35 seconds faster than her previous PR. Kenzie Bowers also earned a medal with a 45th place finish.
On Friday, the Kent City varsity football team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 54-19 victory over Hesperia. The game was never in doubt, as the Eagles jumped out to a 26-0 lead in the first quarter and led 47-6 at the half. Kent City finishes their CSAA Silver schedule with a 5-0 record and their 2nd consecutive CSAA Silver championship. Kent City has never started a football season with a 7-0 record.
The varsity girls golf team finished up league play and now heads to the MHSAA Regionals this week in Kalamazoo. Kent City finished in 4th place in the CSAA Bronze in their inaugural season. Junior Mackenzie Mortensen earned Honorable Mention All-Conference, finishing just a stroke or two away from being 1st Team All-Conference.
On Saturday, the varsity volleyball team finished in 4th place at the Kent City Dig Pink Invitational. However, the play on the volleyball court is much less important than the efforts by Coach Vandy Krueger and the Eagles to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation’s mission is to raise money for research and awareness to someday eliminate breast cancer. Since teaming up with the Side-Out Foundation eight seasons ago, Kent City has raised over $45,000 for the fight against cancer.
3 to Watch
Varsity Volleyball vs. Lakeview (Pink Out)
Tuesday, October 10 @ 7:00 p.m.
The varsity volleyball team will be looking to get back on track in league play after dropping last week’s match to White Cloud 3-0. Kent City crushed the Wildcats at Lakeview in their first meeting 3-0 (25-21; 25-21; & 25-17). The Eagles will be in their pink jerseys for this game as an extension of the Kent City Dig Pink Invitational that took place over the weekend. Anyone wearing this year’s version of the Dig Pink t-shirt will gain free admittance. There may still be some t-shirts available for purchase at Tuesday’s game ($10.00). Watch some high school volleyball and fight cancer.
Varsity Boys Soccer vs. Newaygo (Senior Night)
Thursday, October 12 @ 4:30 p.m.
The varsity boys soccer team will be playing their final home game at Kent City on Thursday. Kent City takes on Newaygo for the second time this season, in the first meeting the Eagles lost to the Lions 4-1. A special group of seniors, the Eagles have put together the most successful season in recent memory by a Kent City boys varsity soccer team. With two games left in the regular season, the Eagles have a chance to get to double digit wins (10) before heading to the MHSAA Districts next week.
Varsity Football @ Vermontville Maple Valley
Friday, October 13 @ 7:00 p.m.
The varsity football team will take a road trip for the first time in four weeks to Vermontville Maple Valley for a showdown with the Lions. Last year, Kent City defeated Maple Valley 42-20 to clinch a spot in the MHSAA playoffs. This year, the Eagles are already in, but the Lions need two wins to (4-3) to guarantee themselves a spot in this year’s playoffs. Maple Valley has no trouble scoring points, averaging 29 points per game including 38 in last week’s 38-13 win over Perry. Kent City is no stranger to the end zone either, amassing 315 points (45 points per game) in their first seven contests. Based on these numbers, the team who plays the best will most likely come away with the win.
Here is this week’s schedule.
